The Art Department in the Department of Performing and Visual Arts at the American University in Cairo is committed to making optimal use of the gallery spaces in the Falaki Academic Center. In these spaces, art faculty will respond to the needs for resources for students in the new art major, as well as the needs of the AUC and Cairo communities at-large to see examples of interesting and innovative work. To this affect, we will organize a yearly cycle of exhibitions to further the department's goal of presenting the best visual culture possible for the education of students, faculty and the Cairo community.
By presenting the planned projects of exhibitions by students, faculty and local artists; by collaborating with other departments and institutions; and by sponsoring international artists, the Art Department will strengthen AUCs commitment to excellence in this field. We hope to strengthen ties with the Cairo art community and the many downtown galleries within a short walking distance of the campus as we increase involvement in their programs. The significant differences between the University gallery and these private spaces will allow for an important dialogue about art and exhibition. We do not intend to compete directly with other members of the local art community, dealers, gallery spaces, etc. The exhibition program includes student exhibitions; faculty programs; inter-disciplinary projects in collaboration with other departments on campus; curated exhibits drawn from local, regional and international artists; and presentations of exceptional new forms into the context of arts continuous change. This programs will serve the need of art students to see work being produced today; the needs of various departments to explore issues relevant to a broad variety of disciplines; and the communitys need to visit a space free of any commercial or governmental controls. Historical exhibitions will be encouraged when topics and materials are pertinent to the general goals and curriculum of the Art Department. Additional related activities may include visiting artist programs and lectures by artists, curators, and arts professionals in conjunction with the exhibitions. |
